BlazeAid volunteers come from all walks of life. You don’t need fencing experience — just a willingness to learn and lend a hand.
🌟 Who Can Volunteer
- No fencing experience needed — you learn on the job.
- Volunteer for a day, a week, or longer.
- All ages 12+ welcome.
- Under‑18s must be supervised by a responsible adult.
- Many volunteers are women, and many are in their 50s–80s.
- You must be able to follow directions and work safely and independently.
🛠️ What the Work Involves
- Not all fencing is heavy work.
- Tasks include clearing debris, helping stand up damaged fences, threading wire, and holding posts.
- You’ll work alongside the property owner and a trained Team Leader.
📞 Before You Arrive
- Contact the Camp Coordinator to discuss your travel plans.
- Confirm insurance and safety requirements before coming to basecamp.
🧷 Safety & Health Requirements
- Ensure your tetanus vaccination is up to date.
- Bring insect repellent (flies and mozzies are common).
- Volunteers are strongly advised to have Ambulance Cover.
- Work is on rural properties in challenging conditions — ensure you’re physically suited.
🚗 Morning Muster & Daily Routine
- Morning Muster is usually at 7:30am every day (including weekends and public holidays).
- Teams may start earlier on hot days.
- Muster includes a welcome, safety briefing, and team assignments.
- Car‑pooling is encouraged; check road conditions before driving your own vehicle.
- Volunteers must have Comprehensive Vehicle Insurance if using their own car for BlazeAid work.
- After a day of fencing, return to camp to relax and share a meal.

Insurance Requirements
🇦🇺 Australian Citizens & Permanent Residents
- Provide Medicare number and expiry when registering.
- Strongly advised to have Ambulance Cover.
🌍 International Volunteers
- Must have travel insurance that covers manual farm volunteering.
- Written proof must be provided to the Camp Coordinator before acceptance.
- Insurance must be active (check waiting periods).
- Ambulance Cover is strongly advised.
- Work done outside BlazeAid camps is not covered by BlazeAid insurance.
🌐 Reciprocal Health Agreement Countries
Belgium, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, UK
- Bring your Medicare card — you’re covered under Australia’s reciprocal agreement.
- Still strongly advised to have Ambulance Cover.
Italy & Malta
- Covered for medical/hospital care for your first 6 months in Australia.
- Must have a current Medicare card.
- After 6 months, you must follow the rules for other international volunteers.
New Zealand & Republic of Ireland
- Covered for public hospital and PBS medicines.
- Must still have travel insurance that covers farm volunteering.
- Ambulance Cover strongly advised.
